In a reading slump

I'm an avid reader.  I will read the back of the shampoo bottle while in the shower (has anyone ever noticed that shampoo bottles are in English and French?  Are people who speak other languages not washing their hair?).  Yet suddenly I am finding myself in a reading slump.

I have several books in my queue in both my Kindle and my Nook.  I have a book out from the library.  I have a stack of books friends and family have lent me.  None of them are calling to me.

Fall is usually my favorite time to read books.  The weather is getting cooler so I don't want to be outside, the days are growing shorter, and I'm starting to go into full hibernation mode.  I should be reading with gusto!  I started a historical mystery, one of my favorite genres, and just couldn't get into it.  So I picked up a romance novel.  It had me rolling my eyes so hard, I thought I was going to get an eye muscle strain.  I love a good romance novel, but come on!  You can't have them going at it like bunnies in the second chapter!  Play hard to get!

So here I am with a brand-spaking-new blog on book reviews and I haven't read anything new since last week.

Do you ever get into a slump?  How do you shake yourself out of it?

  1. YES!! I have gone through this. Most often when I read a really great book and then I don't want to read anything else because I know nothing is going to add up.

I JUST had this happen. I read Angelfall by Susan Ee. I know you already have people giving you book recommendations and it doesn't look like you have a lot of YA on your review list, but that was an amazing book.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you've read the Hunger Games? The whole world seems to have read those books, so it seems like a fair assumption. I'll say that, if you liked the Hunger Games, give Angelfall a shot. It's the first book I've read that compared to HG on the level of non-stop action and tension. It also had just enough romance to make it even better. Every time I thought the writer couldn't up the stakes anymore, she did. Amazing book.

So, I'm done gushing. On another note, when I get in a slump like this, sometimes going back and reading an old favorite gets my happy-reading-gears spinning again. haha.

I followed you back--I always love good book-review blogs! And my blog is pretty new too. Nice to meet you. :)

P.S. Are you aware your captcha is on? You'll probably get more comments if you turn it off. :)

    1. Hi! Thanks for following me back. :)

I have read Hunger Games and I absolutely loved them. The last time I read a book that came even close to it was Divergent.

I do like YA and always want recommendations, so I will add Angelfall to my list. I hope it breaks me out of my slump.

So my captcha is on? I have no idea what that means, but I will find out and turn it off. LOL

  2. To turn the captcha off, just go to "settings" -> "posts and comments" -> "show word verification" and then change it to no :) Captcha just means that comment-ers have to use those pesky word verification things to prove they're not robots haha

I also have an abundance of YA recs to throw at you - since you found me through a ghost story blog hop, I feel obligated to recommend ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD by Kendare Blake. Phenomenal ghost story :) (and the sequel was amazing!)

Oh, and when I get in reading slumps I generally just watch a tv show or a movie. That way, I still get my storytelling fix! Right now I'm sort of in a reading slump because I'm focusing so much on writing my *own* YA story, BUT I have a feeling this weekend will be devoted to a few books that have been unopened for far too long!

    1. Thanks for the tip on captcha. I ended up googling it and found out how to turn it off. :)

I love ghosts stories! And what better time to read them than October? I will add Anna Dressed in Blood to my "to-read" list. Thanks!

I did exactly as you suggested last night and caught up on TV and watched the end of The Big Lebowski. Hopefully between your and Tamara's suggestions, I'll be out of my slump. Thanks for the follow!

    3. Trust me, you did not sound like a know it all. I am so out of my league learning all this stuff, so I just feel like a complete moron. :)

Followed you back! You're a Hokie? I'm a Terp! ACC FTW!

    4. haha I'm glad I didn't sound like a know it all! I had the tab up on my computer and had to work through it as I was typing :P I'm learning about this whole blogging thing too! You are not alone!

And yeah, I'm a Hokie :) Glad to have another ACC-er (that's a word, right?) out on the interwebs :)

  3. Sometimes it's nice to read something totally different than your usual favs. ANNA is a good read, and if you're in the mood for more spooky/scary, Gretchen McNeil's TEN just came out. I haven't read it yet, but it looks good.

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks for the rec, Bethany! Sometimes I get mired down in my favorite genres and forget that any others exist. It's a problem. Perhaps spooky/scary is what I need (I rarely read them). Thanks!
